Khmer Krom's Education in Kampuchea Krom
Traditional Khmer Krom education was taught by the monks in the temples. Students were mostly young boys. Education was limited to memorizing Buddhist chants in Pali language and Buddhist doctrines.
During the French colonization, Khmer Krom students were educated based on the French education system. Both Khmer and French language were taught in the public schools.
During the Republic of South Vietnam colonization, Khmer Krom students were forced to study only Vietnamese in public schools. Khmer Krom students were also forced to use Vietnamese names to go to schools. This is one of the reasons to explain why the Khmer Krom people have Vietnamese names. To learn Khmer, Khmer Krom students had to go to study at the Khmer Krom temples.
During the Vietnamese Communist (VC) colonization (after 1975), the schools in Kampuchea Krom were only allowed to use Vietnamese as an official language. Khmer Krom temples were forbidden to teach Khmer because the VC government afraid that Khmer Krom students would learn about their own language and history.
The VC government brain-washes Khmer Krom middle and high school students by sending them to study at separate schools only for Khmer Krom students. (Truong Dan Toc Noi Tru). These type of schools are pretty similiar to the schools that were used to build for only African-American Students in America.
The VC government does not allow books or documents (especially about Khmer Krom history) to be written or published in Khmer. At this time, the VC government does not provide any opportunities for Khmer Krom to study abroad. About 8 million Khmer Krom people are in Kampuchea Krom, but there is no Khmer Krom who has a PhD degree.
