Khmer Krom's Education in America
After 1975, just like other people in South Vietnam, the Khmer Krom people could not live under the oppression of the VC government. They had to leave their lovely country by Boats or walked to the refugee camps in Thailand via Cambodia, so that they could go to live in other countries without the present of the communist people. Most of Khmer Krom refugee people came to live in the U.S.
Fortunately, living in the U.S., the land of the opportunities, most of the Khmer Krom families have raised their children successfully. With the best quality education system and providing fairly and equally to everyone in the America, the Khmer Krom youths and elders have the opportunities to get higher education. Now, some of them have their B.S., Master, or PhD degrees. Thanks to America for providing Khmer Krom a place to live and the opportunities to get higher education.
To help Khmer Krom Youths to stay in school, the UKKNOI provides some educational services, such as: provide computers for students to search Internet to find information to do their school works, provide free tutoring in Math, Computer, etc. The UKKNOI also opens Cambodian class to help the Khmer Krom Youths to learn their own language. With the generous helps from the Apsara dance group, Khmer Krom Youths can also learn to perform Cambodian classical dances that are taught by the instructors of the Apsara dance group at our community center. Moreover, by the end of each school year, since 2004, the UKKNOI has organized graduation party for the youths who graduated from middle schools, high schools, and universities.
With the efforts that UKKNOI is doing, it will help the Khmer Krom Youths to understand that Education is very important for their lives. The unfortunate Khmer Krom Youths in Kampuchea Krom really want going to school to get higher education, but they do not have opportunities like Khmer Krom Youths in the America. Now, the Khmer Krom Youths who live in a freedom and wealthy society like America should take advantages of what this country provides to get higher education as much as they can. Education does not only help them to have better knowledge, but education can help them to find better jobs, so they can be better off in their lives. Moreover, they can use their knowledge to help other people in America and especially for their unfortunate Khmer Krom people in Kampuchea Krom. Please come to join UKKNOI to fulfill these?important tasks .
